Every spring, JBSP presents a local or national figure to inspire the entire student body in their post-secondary endeavors. At the assembly, the four finalists for the Barnhart Scholars Award are presented prior to the lecture and the winner is announced at the assembly following the lecture.

Taylor Castillo
Healthcare Compliance Leader, Program Manager at UTMB, Doctoral Candidate, UTHealth
Taylor is a dynamic healthcare professional with extensive expertise in healthcare management, policy, compliance, and operational improvement. Currently pursuing a Doctorate in Healthcare Management and Health Policy at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston, Taylor combines academic rigor with years of practical experience to drive impactful results across various healthcare settings.
She also holds a Master of Health Administration from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Science and Arts in Biochemistry and Business from the University of Texas at Austin. As a certified professional in risk adjustment coding and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Taylor has cultivated a diverse skill set in project management, revenue cycle management, compliance investigations, and strategic planning.
Taylor is currently the Program Manager for Billing Compliance at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where she plays a critical role in high-stakes audits and investigations, regulatory compliance, and billing dispute resolutions. Prior to her work at UTMB, Taylor held various leadership roles at both Harris Health System and Texas Children’s Hospital. During her time at these facilities, Taylor managed hospital operations, developed business cases for new facilities, optimized resource allocation to enhance patient throughput and operational efficiency, improved coding workflows, and drove revenue cycle improvements.
Known for her executive communication skills, Taylor has consistently demonstrated the ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes, foster collaborative solutions, and implement sustainable strategies. She is an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Professional Coders, reflecting her commitment to professional excellence and continuous learning.
Beyond her professional achievements, Taylor is dedicated to being involved in her community, mentoring the next generation, and volunteering in her church. Her academic pursuits, generosity, and hands-on expertise make her a leader poised to shape the future of healthcare management and beyond.
